Solutions to Improve First-pass Retention for Paper Machine Wet End

Retention and drainage aids serve as core wet-end chemicals in papermaking. They maximize the retention of fibers and fillers to reduce material loss, accelerate dewatering at the wire section, raise machine speed and cut steam consumption, so as to comprehensively control production costs.

Case: A large mill producing high-grade offset paper in Shandong struggled with high white water concentration due to large dosage of chemimechanical pulp. After adopting our three-component retention & drainage system, the white water concentration dropped evidently, and the first-pass retention rose steadily from below 65% to over 75%. With the addition of anionic trash fixative in later optimization, the cationic demand of wet-end system was reduced without compromising retention performance. The dosage of functional additives was lowered accordingly, which greatly reduced the overall production cost per ton of paper.
