Dadmac monomer, chemically known as diallyldimethylammonium chloride (DADMAC), is a quaternary ammonium monomer widely used in the synthesis of cationic polymers. These polymers are essential in various industries, particularly in water treatment, where they act as coagulants and flocculants to remove suspended solids, organic matter, and other impurities. In pulp and paper production, DADMAC-based polymers enhance pulp drainage, retention, and dry strength, improving process efficiency and paper quality. In the oil and gas sector, they are used in drilling fluids and enhanced oil recovery, providing excellent shale inhibition and viscosity control. Moreover, DADMAC polymers find applications in textile dyeing (as fixing agents) and personal care (as conditioning agents). The synthesis of DADMAC involves the reaction of dimethylamine with allyl chloride, followed by quaternization.
